The information contained on this page was accumulated over the 5 years that
Greybrook Academy has been in operation. Curriculum, special features, and activities
are bound to change on a year to year basis. Greybrook Academy is currently
accessing the future needs for a 2010-2011 school year and will continually update
this site to reflect these changes.
A walk through Greybrook's entrance will tell you that this is a special place, and that children and their welfare is valued here. Some aspects that contribute to making Greybrook special include:
Morning Song
Students, families, teachers, staff, and visitors gather in the gym every morning for Morning Song. Taking the first 10 or 15 minutes of the day to sing., celebrate birthdays, and informally recognize student achievements result in a softer, smoother beginning to the academic day.
Handbells
There are no buzzers at Greybrook; transitions are signaled by a student ringing a handbell, and are thus softened and made less arbitrary. Ringing the bell becomes something that all students look forward to, and the lack of timed buzzers give teachers more flexibility in scheduling lessons to meet the students' needs and abilities at any given time.
Teacher Supervision
During recess and lunch breaks, students are supervised by a rotation of classroom and specialist teachers, so as to give all Greybrook teachers the opportunity to establish informal relationships with every child. We believe that the education of the students is the shared responsibility of the adult community, and these relationships have tremendous benefits as the students progress through our programme.
No Homework Policy
The most current educational research indicates that there are negligible academic gains attributed to the time spent doing homework. With Greybrook's extended school day and longer school year, we have approximately 30% more contact time with our students than most other schools, allowing for more teaching and more learning to take place during school hours. We believe that when children are at home, they should be taking time to relax and reflect, and interact with their families. That said, self-directed study skills are important, and in addition to addressing and developing these strategies in class, we also offer Study Skills option in our after-school activity programmes.
Balanced Calendar
Greybrook's calendar runs from early September through late July, and is divided into five terms. Our summer holiday is about five weeks long, in order to maintain the students work habits, routines, and understanding. This reinforces our belief that education is something constant and life-long, and results in greater academic retention from one school year to the next, and evenly-paced learning throughout the calendar year.
